As Jewish students gathered at the George Washington University Hillel building for an event to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, other students rioted outside the Hillel building in an attempt to disrupt the event. Rioters chanted “Israel is a terrorist state,” accused Hillel of supporting “genocide,” shouted “intifada,” and held up a banner that said “war criminals GTFO [Get The F##K Out].”
Explicitly targeting Jewish students, at a Jewish student center, on a Jewish holiday and harassing them under the guise of protesting Zionism — an integral component of Jewish identity — is blatantly antisemitic. The riot at Hillel comes just days after flyers were distributed across campus with the caption “Zionists f**k off and a year after a Torah scroll was desecrated at GWU.
At a time when antisemitism is at an all-time high in the USA and especially on college campuses, Jewish students deserve to be able to celebrate the holidays without fear of harassment. Call on GWU President Wrighton to condemn the antisemitic rioting that took place on Sukkot and to commit to protecting the safety of Jewish students on campus.
