As antisemitism continues to surge across America and worldwide, King County has the opportunity to play a pivotal role in denouncing Jew-hatred. TODAY, the King County Council is debating whether to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism.
As one of the world's leading defenses against antisemitism, IHRA has been adopted by more than 1,000 entities across the globe, including the U.S. State Department, educational institutions, and nearly 40 countries.
Unfortunately, Israel's detractors are aiming to derail this historic vote by attempting to pressure the committee into refusing to accept the most accurate means to thoroughly identify and combat antisemitism in all of its forms. Currently, an anonymous group is mobilizing supporters to smear IHRA and America's closest ally, Israel.
This antisemitic campaign will only further allow discrimination against the Jewish community to spread unchecked. In a recent report by the ADL, the number of Americans believing antisemitic stereotypes has nearly doubled since 2019. If King County refuses to condemn this bigotry, this number has the potential to triple in the upcoming years.
