Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, one of Israel's most notorious detractors, has directed her latest antisemitic assault against American progressives who support our nation's closest ally. By demanding that Americans pass an anti-Israel litmus test to engage in progressive spaces, Tlaib continues to slander one of the most inclusive countries in the world by labeling it as an apartheid state.
In reality, Israel is a cornerstone of democracy and a beacon of hope for people of all faiths, backgrounds, and ethnicities. Israel's government comprises Jews and Arabs, a record number of foreign-born ministers, women, people with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. More than 58,000 Arabs study at Israel's world-renowned universities, and immigrants from war-torn countries ranging from Ethiopia to Ukraine seek refuge in the Jewish state.
By demanding progressives denounce support for Israel, Tlaib is not only condemning the sole democracy in the region, but she is also directly ostracizing members of the American Jewish community, the majority of which lean Left politically. Approximately seven in ten Jewish young adults identify with the Democratic party, with more than half describing their political views as liberal. Pressuring Jewish Americans into denouncing their indigenous homeland to identify as progressive is incomprehensible and blatant antisemitism.
As expected, other anti-Israel hate groups such as Jewish Voice for Peace and the Institute for Middle East Understanding have voiced support for Tlaib's reprehensible statements. Thankfully, a growing number of progressive Members of Congress have denounced Tlaib's antisemitic rhetoric while encouraging support for America's long-standing democratic ally.
